It is law within the UK that every item of precious metal sold such as Platinum, Gold, Silver is stamped labelling the item with the type of metal it is. Platinum pieces which weigh less than 0.5 grams, 18ct Gold and Palladium pieces weighing less than 1.0 gram and Silver pieces weighing less than 7.78 grams are except from hallmark.
At Diamonds Factory all our products are hallmarked as per UK hallmarking law from London Assay Office (The GoldSmith Company)
The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office is the oldest assay office in the United Kingdom. It has provided hallmarking services since The Goldsmiths' Company was founded in the 1300s. The company received its royal charter in 1327 and ranks 5th in order of precedence of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London.
Hallmarking dates back to the 1300s when Edward I of England passed a law requiring any item made of silver, which was offered for sale, to be at least of equal quality as that of the coin of the realm (silver currency). The wardens of The Goldsmiths' Company were tasked with visiting workshops in the City of London to assay (test) silver articles. If these articles were found to be below standard they were originally destroyed and the metal forfeited to the King. If they passed, each article received the King's mark of authentication - the mark of a leopard's head. By 1478, there were several hundred workshops and merchants manufacturing silver articles in the City of London. It was not possible for the wardens to visit them all so the merchants were ordered to bring their items to Goldsmiths' Hall for testing and marking and a permanent Assay Office was established in the building. This is the origin of the term hallmark - struck with the King's mark at Goldsmiths' Hall.
In 1544 the Goldsmith's Company adopted the King's mark as their town mark and the mark of the leopard's head is now internationally recognised as the mark of this assay office.
The Goldsmiths's Company Assay Office is still based at Goldsmiths's Hall and remains the oldest company in Britain to be continually trading from the same site. However, it also has two satellite offices; at Greville Street in Hatton Garden in the heart of the London jewellery quarter and within a high security complex near London's Heathrow airport. It now has a new off-site facility within the Dalston-based jewellery manufacturer, Allied Gold. This is the first time in the Assay Office's 700 year history that it has opened permanent hallmarking services on a customer's premises.
In addition to hallmarking, the office has now expanded its range of services to support the jewellery trade and enforcement authorities. It offers a variety of specialist analytical services including nickel, lead & cadmium testing, antique silver dating, non-destructive compositional analysis, plating thickness measurement and a melt and assay service for scrap precious metal carried out in their fully independent on-site laboratory. Other services offered are a jewellery valuation service, laser marking, trading standards assistance, high quality photography and a comprehensive range of training and educational seminars, lectures and specialist events.

Emma Stone
The woman of the moment after receiving her second Oscar for Poor Things, we’re obsessed with Emma Stone oozing all the post-engagement glee in her engagement ring debut picture! Emma’s gorgeous pearl engagement ring took everyone’s breath away especially so as not many celebrities opt for a pearl – and we can see it got so much hype thanks to its unique structure. Designed by renowned jeweller Yoshinobu Katoaka, this stunning style was designed to mimic a snowflake, with the radiant pearl taking centre stage. A more simplistic but elegant style of engagement ring, if you love the luminosity of a pearl, opting for an engagement ring like Emma’s could be the way to go!
Katy Perry
If you ask us, this ring is exactly what we’d picture the ever-so talented Miss Katy Perry to be wearing once she got engaged. Not only is it a uniquely designed flower-style shape, but Orlando Bloom also popped the question on Valentine’s too – just to add that extra element of romance into the mix! A more non-traditional and vintage ring design, this stunning 2.50ct oval cut ruby and diamond mixed engagement ring shows off everything we know and love about Katy Perry’s colourful personality. Paired perfectly with yellow gold on a thick band too, what’s not to love?
Myleene Klass
An engagement ring with a dark, opulent difference, we absolutely adore Myleene Klass’s black diamond engagement ring! A very different look as many celebrities are often known for opting for your classic sparkling diamond, a black engagement ring is sure to turn heads and we love how standout and unique they look. Myleene’s now husband Simon actually proposed with a promise ring on their 5-year anniversary, and they later designed the perfect ring together. Featuring an elegant elongated 9ct black diamond, this bespoke ring has an element of art deco-inspired style to it, and this one-of-a-kind beauty certainly won’t be seen rocking around on any other celebrities left hand!
Kate Middleton
Although not your traditional celebrity, we couldn’t touch on all of our favourite celebs without giving ode to Kate Middleton’s spectacular sapphire engagement ring! Presented to her in 2010 when Prince William got down on one knee and proposed, this beautiful ring was actually his late mothers, Princess Diana – and fit Kate perfectly with no resizing needed, like it was truly meant to be. So now let’s get down to the impressive ring stats, and would we expect anything less from an heirloom of a past princess? Set in rich 18 carat white gold, Kate’s engagement ring features a deep blue 12 carat oval-shaped sapphire, surrounded by 14 stunning solitaire diamonds. It’s a true classic, and this iconic ring will be no doubt be passed down to future generations to come, making it an incredibly special piece of jewellery.
Victoria Beckham
Is there a gemstone the iconic Victoria Beckham hasn’t chosen before? With a whopping 15 engagement ring styles under her belt, yes – we said 15! It’s not actually hard to believe that VB has had her fair share of gemstone love affairs. With nearly 25 years of marriage to football legend David Beckham, one of our personal favourite styles is none other than her 7th ring, the glowing green cushion cut emerald engagement ring she sported in 2007. A ring that needs very few words, it’s estimated that this gorgeous green showstopper cost around 3 million, just a drop in the ocean of Victoria’s impressive ring collection estimating just over 32 million (and counting!). We can’t wait to see what else she adds into the mix over throughout the next decade.
And there you have it! Although our budgets might not quite stretch to the same calibre as the rich and the famous, the beauty of Diamonds Factory is that we offer the same high-quality gems at a fraction of the price where everything we sell comes directly from us. Check out our full range of gemstone engagement rings online now.
