The Importance of Metal Compatibility

Although there really are no rules when it comes to mixing metals, you’ll find there are a few metals that certainly complement each other in a more harmonious way. As a place to start, we’ve put together a short list of metals we think work together in unison.

Yellow gold and white gold

Often the first place people start when pairing metals together, yellow and white gold look great when paired together as both colours contrast fabulously against each other. The vibrancy of the yellow complements the subtleness of the white gold excellently, making them a perfect pairing.

Rose gold and yellow gold

A more bold pairing of metals, rose gold is often marked as a tricky metal to mix with others due to its rosy, warm hue, but we think it pairs great alongside yellow gold. If you consider you’re a little more eccentric when it comes to jewellery, mixing rose gold and yellow gold together could create the dynamic duo you never knew you needed.

White gold and silver

Prefer a more subtle look when mixing metals? People often forget that white gold and silver can be worn together too! A less overpowering pair, if you prefer to opt for a more contemporary, classic look then mix your white gold and silver pieces together to create an effortless look.

Less is More

Different metal jewellery.

Often when it comes to layering jewellery and pairing different metals together, the first place people go wrong is by overcomplicating it. Mixing metals doesn’t have to be tricky, so always keep in mind the importance that less is more as when you pair too much together, it can create a disjointed look. If you’re new to layering, start by mixing together two singular metals first like silver and gold and see how it looks. The beauty of this trend is that really all that matters is that you like the finished look, so don’t be afraid to try new pairings out and discover exactly what metals you like the look of when paired together.

Start With Something Statement

The easiest place to start when looking at mastering the art of layering is by choosing a featured piece of jewellery to plan your look around. For example, if we’re talking about a necklace stack, your key piece could feature a sparkling diamond pendant or a bright bold gemstone that takes centre stage. Once you’ve decided what that piece is, start adding some more plain styles to create a layered look. This could be an additional plain chain, or multiple different styles of chains at different lengths. Our top tip is to make sure these layers have a level of cohesiveness, so you could try 3 different styles and different metals, but layer them in a high, medium, low laying format so they all fit together well.

Consider Texture and Finish

Do you prefer to keep things plain or add a little flair to your jewellery combinations? Whilst learning all about mixing your metals together, when layering your jewellery make sure to layer with purpose by incorporating different textures into the mix. What we mean by this, is if you have a plain solid chain, why not pair it with something with more visible links or a pendant attached? Earring stacking is another fun place to mix metals, pair a bold solid hoop with something a little more dainty that drops down and incorporates some diamonds or gemstones to create more of a contrast against one another. This can add a great visual element to your stacked jewellery look.

Remember, You Make The Rules

So there you have it, although we’ve listed a few of our favourite metal mixing tips, the rules are really all up to you! The beauty of mixing metals together is that the main point to it is all about having a little fun with colour and letting your jewellery show off a piece of your personality. So whether you like your layering to look minimal or more on the bolder side of life, the possibilities really are endless and all up to you. Happy metal mixing!
