It is law within the UK that every item of precious metal sold such as Platinum, Gold, Silver is stamped labelling the item with the type of metal it is. Platinum pieces which weigh less than 0.5 grams, 18ct Gold and Palladium pieces weighing less than 1.0 gram and Silver pieces weighing less than 7.78 grams are except from hallmark.
At Diamonds Factory all our products are hallmarked as per UK hallmarking law from London Assay Office (The GoldSmith Company)
The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office is the oldest assay office in the United Kingdom. It has provided hallmarking services since The Goldsmiths' Company was founded in the 1300s. The company received its royal charter in 1327 and ranks 5th in order of precedence of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London.
Hallmarking dates back to the 1300s when Edward I of England passed a law requiring any item made of silver, which was offered for sale, to be at least of equal quality as that of the coin of the realm (silver currency). The wardens of The Goldsmiths' Company were tasked with visiting workshops in the City of London to assay (test) silver articles. If these articles were found to be below standard they were originally destroyed and the metal forfeited to the King. If they passed, each article received the King's mark of authentication - the mark of a leopard's head. By 1478, there were several hundred workshops and merchants manufacturing silver articles in the City of London. It was not possible for the wardens to visit them all so the merchants were ordered to bring their items to Goldsmiths' Hall for testing and marking and a permanent Assay Office was established in the building. This is the origin of the term hallmark - struck with the King's mark at Goldsmiths' Hall.
In 1544 the Goldsmith's Company adopted the King's mark as their town mark and the mark of the leopard's head is now internationally recognised as the mark of this assay office.
The Goldsmiths's Company Assay Office is still based at Goldsmiths's Hall and remains the oldest company in Britain to be continually trading from the same site. However, it also has two satellite offices; at Greville Street in Hatton Garden in the heart of the London jewellery quarter and within a high security complex near London's Heathrow airport. It now has a new off-site facility within the Dalston-based jewellery manufacturer, Allied Gold. This is the first time in the Assay Office's 700 year history that it has opened permanent hallmarking services on a customer's premises.
In addition to hallmarking, the office has now expanded its range of services to support the jewellery trade and enforcement authorities. It offers a variety of specialist analytical services including nickel, lead & cadmium testing, antique silver dating, non-destructive compositional analysis, plating thickness measurement and a melt and assay service for scrap precious metal carried out in their fully independent on-site laboratory. Other services offered are a jewellery valuation service, laser marking, trading standards assistance, high quality photography and a comprehensive range of training and educational seminars, lectures and specialist events.
Getting engaged is one of the few all time highs in life for someone. It’s both a memorable moment and a commitment for a lifetime. So, if you are the one proposing - you’re going to want everything to go just right and so you also need the perfect ring.
But when is the best time to buy an engagement ring? Well, this all depends on when you’re planning the proposal.
When is ‘Engagement Season’ and should you plan for it?
As far as engagement rings go, we have all seen the adverts and promotional videos that come out around Christmas time - so this is a huge indicator.
Engagement season is usually November through to February and it is estimated that a third of couples get engaged during this time. Therefore the demand for rings is at an all time high. Maybe this is because the holidays are spent with family, or maybe it just feels like the perfect time to propose, either way, this is the time of the year that rings are just flying off the display cases.
So if this is when you want to propose, then plan ahead and get the ring a month or so before the craziness starts.
We advise you buy your ring between July and August because this is typically known as wedding season. Many couples get married during the summer months and so you should be able to find some great deals on engagement rings, as wedding rings are the more popular choice at this time of year.
How far in advance should you buy an engagement ring?
We recommend that you purchase the engagement ring at least three months before you are planning to propose, this then gives you enough time to change things and/or plan everything so it runs smoothly.
The last thing you want is for the ring production to be delayed and cause havoc to your proposal timetable, it can take up to six to eight weeks to make any ring adjustments too so bear this in mind. Buying a ready made style can take this worry away though.
When it comes to buying your ring, set yourself a budget so that when you are browsing styles you know what sort of thing you should be looking for and you can tell the jeweller your exact budget - making it easier to filter down your search and find the right ring more quickly.
What to consider when buying the engagement ring
Also, think practically and keep your partner’s lifestyle in mind too. It’s best to avoid buying an engagement ring that they could find uncomfortable or would need to remove often because of work or daily activity. If your partner is someone who loves sports, then you should opt for a slimmer ring with round edges.
Those people who work with their hands might want to avoid a big diamond engagement ring or wedding ring and go for something a little simpler that doesn’t trap dirt. Think about other jewellery worn by your soon to be fiancé because if their future engagement ring isn’t the only piece they’ll be wearing then you might want to shop for something that goes well with what they already own.
Don't forget to think about other jewellery worn by your soon to be fiancé because if their future engagement ring isn’t the only piece they’ll be wearing then you might want to shop for something that goes well with what they already own. Take a look at our selection of gemstone engagement rings available in ruby, sapphire or emerald that may suit their personal tastes.
When to buy your wedding ring
So, when do you buy your wedding rings? We recommend around three to four months prior to your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to browse ring styles, take a few shopping trips to try them on and to decide together which bands are best for you and your lifestyle. Leaving wedding ring shopping too late will only cause stress closer to the big day, so make a job midway through the wedding planning.
Consider looking to see if the brand your engagement ring was purchased from offers a matching wedding band. This can make the whole process much easier and also ensures the rings will sit comfortably together on the finger.
Your wedding rings don’t have to be matching in style - many couples have completely different tastes and preferences but it’s fun to shop for them together and to choose the bands that you intend to swap on the day to signify your commitment and love for one another forever more.
What to do once they’ve said yes!
So you’ve decided on the engagement ring and know when to buy the engagement ring and they’ve said yes - now what? Here are some things you need to do!
Call friends and family
This is normally one of the first things people do. You want to share your exciting news! Try and do it over the phone, rather than via text, Facebook, Twitter or email, as nobody likes to be the last one to know or find out that way if they’re close to you. Set aside a couple of hours to make some phone calls together.
Get the ring sized
The ring is perfect, it sparkles beautifully but perhaps it’s a little bit too big or slightly too tight. Get it resized ASAP because after all you want your partner to be showing it off to everyone you see and the last thing you want after all that decision making is to lose it.
Take out insurance
Nothing will ever replace the sentimental value of your ring, but if something does happen to it, at least it is possible to get the money back. If you have homeowners or contents insurance then add your ring to your policy. You might need to get an official appraisal before you can add it, so call the insurance broker to see if paperwork is required.
Set the date
After all of the congratulations are out of the way, the first thing people are going to ask is, “When’s the wedding?” It’ll save you lots of headaches if you just go with a vague-yet-specific answer, “this time in two years time” or “in the summer”. People just want to constantly feel in the loop and involved when it comes to weddings and they can start putting it in their metal diaries. It will also give you and your other half a little direction to start planning.
Have a night out with your fiancé
Plan a night out for the two of you. Get in some good face time with one another and just enjoy each other's company and hit the town to celebrate.
Buy wedding planning stationery
Get yourself a calendar, a diary, a wedding planner binder and an organiser. This will help you massively and help get everything organise and ready. The Knot website also has some great expert tips on planning your wedding, if you need some inspiration and ideas.
Decide whether or not you want a wedding planner
Review the elements of your wedding like venue, organisation, and party favours - figure out if these are tasks that you would like to tackle on your own or if you’d rather hire a wedding planner to help reduce some stress. Remember that a planner will cost extra money, so make sure the option fits into your budget before putting it into consideration.
Open a wedding savings account
Weddings cost money - and a lot of money at that. Opening a wedding saving bank account is an easy way for you to keep your money secure and accumulating for your big day. Just head to your bank and open a basic savings account, or take a look at some higher interest accounts and deposit a certain amount every time you’ve been paid that can go towards wedding expenses only.
Draft a guest list
You will need to consider a number of factors when it comes to your guest list. If you think you know already where you want to hold your wedding and the reception you then need to consider the number of people you can accommodate for.
Would you rather have quality one-on-one time with each guest or would you like to throw the ultimate once in a lifetime party? Keep in mind that more guests mean more money, especially as catering costs tend to be per head. In addition, the location and your budget will have a big influence on your guest list size.
