All About
Yellow Gold
Yellow Gold is just one of the many precious metals we use in our jewellery here at Diamonds Factory. Known and loved for its alluring warmth and charm, with its beautiful bright sunny hue and strong hypoallergenic properties, it comes to no surprise that it’s often a popular choice for an engagement or wedding ring.
How is yellow gold made?
Yellow gold is created by combining pure gold with alloy metals such as zinc and copper. The gold purity is measured in the same way as white and rose gold, and the higher the karat the more yellow the gold will be, however it's important to note that the higher the karat the more softer and prone to damage the metal will be.
What are the pros and cons of choosing yellow gold?
There are plenty of pros when it comes to opting for yellow gold. It’s often a traditional choice for jewellery and a main reason for this is because it doesn’t rust, meaning it won’t lose its gorgeous warm yellow colouring over time. It’s great for sensitive skin thanks to high purity and usually considered one of the safest choices. Gold is a very malleable and great metal for our craftspeople to work with, so if you’re looking to create something more bespoke, yellow gold often works well with more detailed, intricate designs too.
In our opinion, there aren’t many cons when it comes to yellow gold as we believe it’s an amazing metal choice. It all depends on the karat you buy, as higher karat gold can be more susceptible to damage and wear due to its softness. Another con may be due to its distinct colour can vary, matching it completely against other jewellery may be difficult at times.
What’s the difference between 18K, 14K and 9k yellow gold?
When talking about the different karats of gold, we are fundamentally talking about the overall purity and pure gold content that the metal contains. 18K contains 75% gold, and is more of a deep and rich yellow colour - because of its high gold content it has an incredibly high resistance to tarnishing. 14K contains 58.3% gold and is often our customers go-to metal choice as it’s deemed a great pick for daily wear items such as engagement rings. Finally, 9K contains 37.5% gold and is lighter and paler in colour, it’s praised for being much more durable, with excellent resistance to scratching whilst also being the most affordable choice. The decision is entirely up to you when choosing a metal, however when it comes to yellow gold, our advice would often be to go down the middle and opt for 14K as it's the industry standard and ticks all the boxes.
How to care for your gold jewellery
- It's important to clean your jewellery often, as general day-to-day wear can cause a build-up of dirt and can leave your jewellery looking and feeling tired, especially those higher karat gold pieces.
- Remove your gold jewellery whilst exercising or completing rough tasks to avoid damage to the clasps and precious stone settings.
